Leading with Your Gut (and Your Values): It’s Not as Fuzzy as You Think

Hey there, fellow leaders. Ever feel like you’re walking a tightrope, juggling competing priorities and trying to make the right call? It’s tough, right? Especially when you’re trying to stay true to your own values or the core principles of your company. That’s what principled leadership is all about, and it’s more critical now than ever.

Think about it: as leaders, we’re constantly facing tough decisions. How do we balance hitting our targets with, say, ensuring everyone on the team feels supported and respected? How do we prioritize speed and efficiency without sacrificing quality or, worse, integrity? It’s a constant balancing act.

Let me tell you a story that really brought this home for me: the Johnson & Johnson Tylenol crisis. Remember that? Their response was a masterclass in principled leadership. They didn’t just react; they demonstrated a deep commitment to their customers’ safety – a core value that was clearly part of their DNA. They pulled all their Tylenol products, putting people’s well-being ahead of immediate profits. That was a bold move, and it spoke volumes.

Now, in many organizations, the pressure to perform can be intense. It’s easy to fall into the trap of prioritizing production above all else. But what the J&J case shows us is that when a company truly lives its values, it guides leaders, especially in times of crisis. It helps them make decisions that align with long-term ethical standards, not just short-term gains.

So, what’s the takeaway? Principled leadership isn’t some abstract concept. It’s about making choices, sometimes difficult ones, that reflect your values and the values of your organization. It’s about leading with your gut and your values. And it’s more powerful than you might think.

What are your thoughts? I’d love to hear your experiences with principled leadership in the comments below.
